a page of instructions for the participating schools in the 2010
learnover event in February (date tbc):
numbers
this will be over 24 hours, and for 48
school - one scheduled for each half
hour using GMT in as many different countries as we can muster
principles:
- we will be communicating one school at a time
by video using twitcam
- all the other schools will watch the video
stream in unlimited twitcam windows until
it is their turn
- as they watch they can post their own questions
in a text window which
twitcam provides alongside the video
- others too may question and comment
in this space - we will block any inappropriate ones
- at the end of each video twitcam session, by each school, the video window
and text conversation will be saved
- then the next school starts... etc
techy details:
- you will need a school Twitter account
- and will need that to create a Twitcam broadcasting page
- you will need to monitor the twitter conference - search in Twitter for
the hashtag #learnover using the little search window:
- in Twitcam, when it is your turn to broadcast to the other schools, you
will click the Broadcast
Live red button, and Twitcam will give you a url - as example is below,
but this will change each time you start a broadcast, so you
won't know the correct url until you begin your turn:
- as you start to broadcast you will need to paste the Twitcam link into
Twitter, including the hash-tag #learnover, like
this example:
- and when everyone else searches Twitter for #learnover, and as they watch
the Twitter stream that results, they will see all contributions. By the
way, you may want to save the #learnover search to make things easier.
- and then you just sit back, watch whichever school is "on" at
the time, chat in their Twitcam chat window and find out about their lives
and schools...
you will want to
test all this first of course! This is very much a test event... thankyou all
for being so brave! and for giving up your time.
show and tell details
You will only have a half hour to show your
school and field questions from
the others, and from guests.
Ideally, you will have a wireless laptop and
a camera attached so that you
can be touring the school to show the bits you have selected as interesting
- remember that what you take for granted (death adders, iguanas, motorways,
coral reefs, ethnic diversity, uniforms, Latin... other may find completely
captivating - or amazing
The student wandering round generating live video and talking into the microphone
("...and here is our creek with the aligators in it...")
should probably not be the team who will be answering the short tweet messages
from others ("what happens to naughty children in your school...?")
You may want to rehearse your tour, although perhaps not
quite like this one.
